As I was looking over the list of banned or threatened books on the ALA website I was quite shocked that even today some of the more well known books are challenged in our schools. I do think that in a school there should be some sort of rating system (one of the reasons I have added a rating system to books I review) I don't think that banning a book from the school will solve anything. I wasn't allowed to read those romance novels as a teen and you better believe that I actively searched out those titles and read them behind closed doors. Harry Potter and Twilight have been challenged in many schools over the last decade, but HP especially has brought out many non-readers into our wonderful world of fantasy! I do think it is the responsibility of teachers and parents too make sure that their child knows fact from fantasy and keep involved in their child's reading list and answer those questions that can crop up! No matter what your view is on this subject..... Just please Keep Reading (authors have to eat too)!
Anyway....off my soapbox and on to the prize!
For anyone who has access to The Book Depository
$10 Gift Certificate to buy your banned or challenged book
Did you know A Wrinkle in Time has been challenged?
I don't think books should be banned, I just wish there was a rating system in place for books like there is music and movies so parents have a head's up as to content and can help kids choose more age appropriately.
I'm not really shocked about any that are on the list. If anything, I'm surprised that there aren't more. Its always the most thought provoking books that seem to offend and cause controversy. Unfortunately, some peoples arrogant assumption that they have the right to deny the right to choose what to read away from other parents and children based on their own personal beliefs doesn't shock me at all.
I just heard that Water for Elephants was on the list (banned or challenged). Haven't checked yet, but if it's true I'm really surprised about it. Great giveaway! Thanks :-) _yay_
I'm pretty familiar with the Banned Books List by now, but I think it should be a crime to ban Harry Potter :( Makes me sad b/c I know some religious ppl who would not let their children read it because of the "witchcraft".
I agree, The Diary of Anne Frank??? Required reading when I was in school. Chanticlear1(at)gmail(dot)com Thanks for your generous contribution to the Banned Books Week Giveaway Blog Hop!
I'm always surprised by the books that make the list. The Diary of Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird, anything by Dr. Seuss. It all surprises me insanityisnormal(at)gmail(dot)com
I'm not surprised by a lot of them because there are so many people with different views on life and there is always going to be someone offended by a book. However, I was surprised to find Flowers For Algernon on the list.
To Kill a Mockingbird - especially in recent years.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that the Harry Potter books were challenged and even topped the most challenged books of the past decade!

The Harry Potter books amaze me by being on this list. Granted, they're pretty dark, but I don't really believe they're that extreme.
